Taiwan, a country famous for its delicious food, is also known for having a super tall mega structure. The Taipei 101, situated in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan, is a skyscraper that stands apart from the other tall buildings that astonish people around the world. Here are some details about this marvel that might leave you in amazement.
History
Planning for Taipei 101 began in July 1997. Merchants and the government officials of Taipei were already in talks to create a structure that could encourage development in new Taipei’s 101 business district. The license to build a 101 story tall building was granted in the summer of 2001, although the construction had begun in July 1999 with the first tower column already on site in June 2000. A major earthquake had hit the city of Taiwan on 31 March 2002 causing some problems to the ongoing construction of Taipei 101. However, no structural damage was caused to the building and the work restarted within a week. Three years later, on 1July 2003, the roof of Taipei 101 was completed and the achievement was signified by Ma Ying-Jeou, who was the mayor of
Taiwan during that time. The tower was formally opened on the New Year’s Eve 2004 with some renowned artists performing open-air concerts in the presence of the country’s leaders. After a few hours, fireworks show at Taipei 101 welcomed the arrival of 2005 and the country’s pride, Taipei 101.
Some Amazing Features of Taipei 101
Formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center, Taipei 101 was the world’s tallest building from its inaugural in 2004 until the completion of BurjKhalifa in 2010.
It is the world’s tallest and largest green building, a title that it received in 2011.
It’s elevators can run at a staggering speed of 60.6 kmph (37.7 mph) and can cover a distance of 84 floors (from 5th floor to the 89th floor) in a mere 37 seconds.
Standing 1,671ft (509.2 m) tall, Taipei 101 comprises of 101 floors with 5 additional basement levels.
The postmodernist style of architecture of this marvel can withstand tropical storms, typhoon winds and even earthquakes measuring a devastating 9 on the Richter scale.
The height of the Taipei 101, comprising of 101 floor, symbolizes the beginning of a new century (100+1).
The main tower comprises of eight segments of eight floors each. In Chinese-speaking cultures, eight symbolizes prosperity, abundance and good fortune. The repeated segments portray the Asian Pagoda having religious connections.
With many such exciting facts and religious beliefs instilled in the creation of this sky high building, Taipei 101 is a unique representation of Chinese culture, philosophy, beliefs and the exorbitant work rate of the people of the Republic of China or Taiwan, former being the formal name of the nation. This architectural splendor is believed to last for ages, reason being the exceptional attention given to each and every part of the structure during the process to make sure the climatic conditions of the area do not affect the skyscraper, not even in the slightest. This world might have 7 wonders on paper, but when it comes to visiting the spectacular works of people across the globe, there is no denying the fact that the wonders are countless.
