What is a Toboggan?

Toboggan is a sled used for sliding downhill generally on snow or ice. However, in southern America toboggan means a kind of hat because of the rarity of snow in the region. Toboggan in Madeira, on the other hand, is a major tourist attraction of Funchal, the capital city of Madeira. Carro de Cesto

“Carro de Cesto” is a means of transportation and entertainment for tourists who visit Funchal. The ride begins at the Nossa Senhora de Monte Church and goes downhill to Livramento- a suburb of Funchal – two kilometers away. The ride downhill is breathtaking. Two men, called “Carreiros”, wearing white suits and hats, are your chauffeurs who run the toboggan with their special rubber-soled shoes that help them to brake and turn the toboggan when needed.  The trip to your destination takes about 10 minutes and you can expect a top speed of 30mph (48 kmph), while enjoying your ride.

Getting a ride

Madeira is an autonomous part of the region of Portugal. It is an archipelago and a major tourist attraction. The Madeira airport is well connected with major cities of Portugal. It is just one and a half hour away from Lisbon via flight. When in Funchal, the city that has the toboggan run, take a Monte cable car from Funchal to Monte and from there it is hardly a 10 minute walk to the Nossa Senhora de Monte Church where the ride begins. You can easily find people with a sled wearing white suits ready to take people to the bottom with some fun. It is a major tourist attraction, so it is a bit expensive. Around 30 euros for two people would be a great deal, however during peak times it might cost you more. Also, the toboggan ride will not make you see the entire city. After the ride ends, you will need to take a taxi or walk for about 20 to 30 minutes to reach all the way to Funchal. Take your time and enjoy the beautiful region, the ride and the walks are totally worth it.
