Bio-metrics
Biometrics
We live in a world today, in which technology moves at a very rapid pace and is full of innovation. Security is one of the biggest problems throughout the world. One of the technological advances is Biometrics which can be used to identify a person so that we can allow them to have access to a system or data. It helps us to differentiate digitally who has authorization and who has not.
How biometrics works
The system compares the data which it is receiving currently by the preset group of data already stored in the database. If both the attributes are matching up, that person will be granted access and if it’s not, then the same will be denied. Irises, handprints, modulation of your voice, facial recognition, etc. can be used to differentiate people when using biometrics.
Advantages of Biometrics
Convenient and fast
Not easy to fool the system
Non-transferable
No need to remember long and hard passwords
Disadvantages of Biometrics
A high level of investment is needed to set up a good biometric system and large storage room.
Hacking is still a possibility if done by an expert
Lack of privacy as the system is collecting personal data of users
Sometimes, difficulty in accessing the system due to error in reading/mismatch of data
From taking attendance in the school and offices to accessing a confidential file only meant for certain users, Biometrics is very useful.
Aadhaar is the largest biometric database in the world to digitally verify if that person exists or not anywhere and anytime at ease. It uses the individual’s personal details such as their name, gender, phone, father’s name, etc. through biometric data such as fingerprint, a scan of your eye, and photo of your face. All the biometric data is in encrypted form, still, privacy concerns were raised by critics as our data could easily be used by others because the system security was not that strong.
To remove the traditional PIN and Password process, biometrics has proven to be a much better alternative due to its speed, accuracy, and verification system. It is a strong weapon against identity theft as it’s almost impossible to steal fingerprint and iris data as compared to a mere password. It’s a great way to deny the requests of those who are not recognized by the system. It’s pros outweigh its cons in many aspects.
It’s a cutting-edge technology which is here to stay but of course, due to continuous innovation, several updates and tech will be created which will be much superior and secure as compared to the current system.
