Planet over Profit

                                         Planet over Profit

With the rising awareness about climate change, species extinction, pollution, and sustainable development- NGOs, groups, and governments are constantly trying to preserve the environment. The coming generation is becoming increasingly conscious about the importance of protecting our planet. Then where exactly are we going wrong? To understand this let us know what is sustainable development-

Sustainable development is development that meets the need of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

There is a problem with the interpretation of the slogan ‘planet over profit’. The non-environment-friendly industrialists and businessmen have convinced people that they choose the planet over profit but is that the reality?  The answer to that is evident.

Who will choose to make a better future ( which is already unpredictable) at the cost of living life today? Only when planet and profit both can go hand in hand that’s when we are talking about sustainable development. It obviously requires more effort. But this is the least we can do for the coming generation. We all want to leave the planet in a better condition than how we received it.

What is profit? it means to get an advantage from something. Something beneficial. It’s not always about money. We are here talking about the planet over the financial profit of wealthy environment-friendly industrialists.

Government policies, acts, or work of NGOs should be able to tackle all these people only seeking profit without thinking about the consequences and their effect on the future. As individuals, our actions and efforts do play an important role too. We can do a bit by saying no to plastic, planting trees, controlling pollution, etc.  So it is the right time to choose our planet. We only have one. Today is the best time let’s do something our children will be thankful for.

Last, but not least, even though “Planet and Profit” can hold, we should also rethink how we evaluate the meaning of the word profit. Maybe the time has come when we should focus on the happiness index – as New Zealand or Bhutan have done – and try to live in a world where happiness does not revolve [only] around money and GDP.
