PhD is short for Doctor of Philosophy. It is the highest University degree that is conferred after a course of study by universities in most countries. The completion of a PhD is often a requirement for employment as a University professor, research associate, to serve as a scientist in many fields. 



So let’s know direct PhD requirements in India. There is no age limit for pursuing PhD in India. Master's degree holders are eligible for admission into the doctoral program. Although for some subjects having a master in philosophy(MPhil)  in the field is needed for Ph.D. It must be noted by the candidate that in some Indian universities, for a master's program a specific percentage (or equivalent CGPA) is required by the candidates to be eligible to apply for a Ph.D.

For admission to some reputable University, candidates must qualify the all-India examination, as the National eligibility test for lectureship(NET) conducted by NTA. Final year students appearing in the qualifying degree examination can also apply although they may submit the attested copies of their qualifying degree certificates. 

Admission is offered based on an interview the interviewer may be supplemented with the written exam if needed.

Candidates should have a valid Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score to pursue a Ph.D. in the field of engineering and technology. Also, a candidate should have completed his or her degree in M.Tech /M.E in any engineering branch to apply for a Ph.D. in engineering.

To be eligible for a Ph.D. there are many other Ph.D. entrance tests in India that one can take.

  • It is important to note that for a Ph.D. from abroad with the scholarship you should excel in the general GRE and the subject GRE because many universities require the latter

  • You must tell the universities the specific area you wish to specialize in after you are sure when to apply for Ph.D. This should be an area that interests you a lot. If you have some idea of the topic as well, go ahead and inform the admissions committee. 


In a nutshell, A Ph.D. is considered to be the highest degree of educational qualification. It signifies a remarkable level of knowledge in the concerned field and requires substantial efforts to attain that level of capability. Hope this article helps aspirants to achieve their goals.
