Specialities of the month of May

Specialties of the month of May

The month of May signifies so many different things to people that it is hard, to sum up, its importance in a single thought. While May is considered a time of new harvest and celebrations for farmers across the country, it also ushers in the dreaded Indian summers, which in turn is symbolized by vacations for children and family trips to the hills for a lot of Indian families.

However, the importance of May runs much deeper than just the basic symbolic inferences to which we as a society often restrict ourselves to. It also has a significant place of honor within religious and spiritual connotations, cultural diversity and societal practices. Here are some of the unique things which make May, the most mystical of all months:

  1. Despite a majority of months being named after Greek Gods and even the occasional Roman king, May is named after Maia. She is the Greek Goddess of fertility and this is signified by May being the month of harvest for farmers across the world.

  2. May’s relation with success and productivity is also clearly seen in the fact that according to the study of gems, the birthstone for May is Emerald which is easily identifiable for being distinctly green in color and is supposed to bring good fortunes and even better chances at being successful in love.

  3. However, although May is a wonderful time to fall in love according to the birthstone and horoscopes, it is also considered a terrible month to engage in marriage. Most communities forbid weddings in May, and there is also a poem that speaks about this tradition, and reminds readers that “marrying in May will make you rue the day”

  4.  Apart from India, other countries too have quite good connections with May, with this month being considered the National Smile Month in the United Kingdom

  5. Not ready to stay too far on the list, the United States of America has also made the month of May quite memorable for themselves as the time when the Empire State Building, an instantly recognizable monument from New York, was opened

  6. In the Catholic Church, the month of May is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, thus carrying forward the Greek tradition of considering May synonymous to fertility and motherhood

  7. It is also celebrated as Skin Cancer Awareness Month across the world and is a month dedicated to spreading awareness and a message of positivity towards the victims of skin cancer.

All in all, the month of May has many feathers in its hat, but the most important one is to signify a better life and world.
