The Bengal tiger, also known as Royal Bengal Tiger is the national animal of both India and Bangladesh. It is native to the Indian subcontinent and hence it is mainly found in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries. The scientific name of Bengal Tiger is “Panthera Tigris Tigris”. This tiger is one of the biggest wild cats who are alive today. The number of this animal is very less in the world and hence it is included in the list of endangered species.
It is estimated that Bengal Tigers were present in Indian subcontinent from about 12000 to 16000 years ago. There are approximately 3000 tigers present in India in 2018 which is somewhat more than the previous numbers. Bangladesh has around 440 tigers, Nepal has approx. 200 tigers, Bhutan has around 100 tigers and these tigers are also present in other neighbouring countries but in very less number.
There is a difference between Bengal tiger and Siberian tiger because when their samples were examined then different monophyletic clades were found. The Bengal tiger has a yellow to orange colour coat with various stripes having brown to black colour. Male tigers have an average length of 270 to 300 cm whereas for females, body length is 240 to 260 cm. The height of these tigers ranges from 90 to 110 cm high. They have a weight of approximately 180 kg to 250 kg on average while female tigresses are three fourth of the weight of male tigers. Tigers have exceptionally strong teeth which are around 8 to 10 cm long and are the longest among all cats. Although the heaviest wild Bengal tiger had a weight of at least 380 kg who was killed in 1967 at the foothills of the Himalayas.
In India, the Bengal tiger is found in many parts. India is home to approx. 80% of the Bengal tiger in the world. There are 50 tiger reserves in this country that are governed by Project tiger. Project tiger is a tiger conservation program launched by the government of India in April 1973. This project is administered by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). This project is one of the most successful animal conservation projects in the world. It has increased the number of tigers from 1411 in 2006 to 2967 in 2018.
Bengal Tiger has many threats. Poaching is one of the most potent threats to these tigers. The reason for the poaching of the tiger is its valuable body parts such as its skin which is used in making different products, its nail which is used by magicians and its different body parts were used in making medicines in various countries mainly in China. Sometimes they were also killed during hunting. Earlier, Tiger hunting was considered a royal sport which were often played by Britishers.
Bengal Tiger is indeed very beautiful and brave. The Indian government is spending a very large amount of money to conserve these tigers so that our future generation can see this royal animal. Thus, I must not harm this animal and try to conserve it. Also, we should try to avoid using things that are made from the body parts of such endangered species. This will help to reduce the poaching of tigers.
