CACHE AND COOKIES

 CACHE AND COOKIES

Cache, as well as cookies, have been fabricated with the sheer purpose of spicing up the web site performance of the end-user. And that’s their story. But all of it, can’t be that easy to comprehend, can it? Both these things look towards making the browsing experience a little better. A web browser works as an application over computers, mobile devices, and other PDAs to explore the internet. Cache, as well as cookies, work as a way to store the data from a website on a visitor’s device locally.

Here we’re going to be trying to break down browser cache as well as cookies and also work towards getting an understanding of what separates them from one another.

A cache is used for the purpose of storing the online resources with the purpose of reducing the loading times while on the other hand cookies make the way for storing the preferences of the user during the browsing session.

Let us take a detailed look into each-

Browser cache-

This has the purpose of reducing the loading time of a webpage. In general, terms, caching refers to temporarily storing data in a particular spot, so that the retrieval of the particular data in the future becomes faster. It works as a way of downloading the website images as well as other data for a quicker viewing in the future. By keeping a local copy of some of the website information, the browser will work towards loading the particular same information again from every page that has been visited without downloading the data that was cached earlier. All this process has a downside to it too, as the information that is cached earlier might have changed over the period of time.

A better understanding of Cache-

  • Stores web site content for a longer purpose

  • Expires manually

  • Contents stored in the browser itself

  • Consumes large space in terms of the capacity

  • Contents stored- HTML pages, images, Javascript, CSS

Cookies-

Cookies are primarily used by third parties to track a user’s browsing history, to basically serve them ads as an example, that match their tastes. A cookie can be understood better as a small file that is stored on the visitor’s device and is containing the data that is specific to that particular user. Cookies are only used to store the data that is text-based like visit history, session ID, IP addresses. Cookies cannot be used to store images as the browser cache is prominently used. The structure in which cookies as a tool are based, also makes it a privacy concern for the user on a broader scale. Cookies often track information like how frequently the user visits, what are the times, banners that have been clicked on,  user preferences, items in a shopping cart, etc. This brings the publisher the ability to present the visitor with information that is customized for his/her needs.

A better understanding of cache-

  • Stores user choices

  • Expires automatically

  • Content stored in the server as well as the browser

  • Consumes lesser space in terms of capacity

  • Content stored- browsing sessions and  temporary tracking data
