Cake
The cake is one of the most widely accepted sweet foods throughout the world which is available in different varieties and can be used on numerous different occasions. Each variety of cake has its own ingredients from which it is made and also has its own recipe. But the basic ingredients of a basic cake are flour, baking powder, eggs, butter, sugar, etc. Earlier, the cake was made only by the modification of loaves of bread, but as time passes, it starts gaining attraction from the people and many new varieties and methods of preparation come into play.
Cake has a long but very interesting history. The word cake was derived from the word “kaka” which is an old Norse word. In ancient times, In different places of the world, it had a different name and slightly different methods of cooking. The cakes that were initially made were very different from what we see today. According to some historians, the first evidence of baking was found in ancient Egyptian culture. The ancient Greek people called it Satura which is made up of flour, eggs, milk, honey, and dry fruits. They also prepared Cheesecakes which were made from goat’s milk. Roman people called it Placenta which was baked as a pastry in a pastry case. Ancient European people generally referred to bread as a cake except for some differences in their cooking processes.
Nowadays, cakes are available in different varieties such as Butter cake, Fruit cake, Chocolate cake, Spongy cake, chiffon cake and the list goes longer. It is also available as a replacement for pies, pastries, meringues etc and can also be used as a dessert. People are now using cakes on various occasions like marriage, birthday parties, success parties, in anniversaries, etc. Some very special Cakes are also used in different special festivals like on Christmas day people make Christmas cake which is generally very big and are decorated with dry fruits and others and also provide it with ice covering, On Halloween, different types of Halloween cakes are prepared which are based on different Halloween themes, with many shapes such as pumpkins with variety of colours.
