Impact of social media on mental health

Impact of social media on mental health

Social media has been observed to be vastly influential upon the gullible sense of understanding of the generation of today. The futurity’s well being and intelligence levels, as well as the emotional quotient, is sure to have influences to be derived from the levels of usage of social media. Social media can unfalteringly be held responsible for the aggravating issues related to mental health in today’s times. More adolescents and young adults use various social media platforms today than ever. This is distinctly reflected once we take a look at the statistics,

  • Almost about 44 percent of adolescents today agree to be online several times a day.

  • The situation worsens when we look at the other end, about 45 percent of the people today especially adolescents agree to be online almost constantly.

  • Over 40 percent of adolescent girls and over 20 percent of adolescent boys report using social media for a duration exceeding about 3 or more hours in a day.

  • The most popular social media platforms are Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter.

The technology landscape has been changing rapidly and can be seen as evolving exponentially over the recent years, with social media playing a major role in the lives of the youth. Although social media can allow people to reach the farthest of the corners on the planet and can allow people to reach out and connect with each other. It can also make them feel worse and pose a problem to the mental health of the individuals. This can also be fairly evident once we look at the statistics underlying the surface-

  • Almost about 13% of 12-17-year-olds reporting depression and 32% reporting anxiety

  • Mental illness is a concern for adolescent health and also has been observed to be a concern for young adults as well- since 25% of 18-25-year-olds report having some form of mental illness.

Depression has been seen to be a very evident phenomenon among teenagers today. Many of the studies have overtime found a connection between the time spent by an individual over social media as well as the number of social media platforms used and the various symptoms of anxiety and depression of the people. A plethora of studies indicates the time spent over social media to be positively correlated with depression as well as anxiety. It is though unclear on a broader basis to observe if people who are already more depressed or more anxious use social media more than their peers do or social media has the potential to mess with the mental health on a widespread basis on a major basis- if social media really leads to depression and anxiety symptoms. But one thing that one can learn upon the closer examination of the statistics over time (which has been the major point of concern to address, by the view of this article), that social media encroaching upon people’s lives more than an acceptable amount of time invested in it, does play with the mental well being of the people
