Assam is a state in north eastern India, situated south of the eastern.
With the partition and independence of India in 1947, the district of Sylhet (excluding the Karimganj subdivision) was ceded to Pakistan (the eastern portion of which later became Bangladesh). Assam became a constituent state of India in 1950.

The largest city of Assam is Guwahati.
By area, Karbi Anglong is largest and Kamrup Metro is smallest district in Assam.
Area wise rank of Assam within India is 16th.
Language usually spoken by the people of Assam is Assamese.
Assam is known for Assam tea and Assam silk. The state was the first site for oil drilling in Asia.

State Symbols of Assam: White-winged Duck or White-winged Wood Duck is the state bird of Assam. Locally known as Deohaanh.

If you are planning to visit Assam, Assam lies in the North-East region of India. You can plan a trip to Assam all year long, but the best time to visit Assam is during the months of winters and summers, i.e.: November to March. Winters in Assam are chilling but enjoyable, and summers are delightful and refreshing.

The Legislative Assembly comprises 126 Members of Legislative Assembly, directly elected from single-seat constituencies.
