Fruits form an integral part of a healthy diet. Fruits provide us with essential vitamins and minerals with a bonus of high fiber content. They can even correct deficiency diseases like scurvy, which is basically a deficiency of vitamin C in the body. Jackfruit, a fruit and a vegetable, has been a part of the South East Asian, particularly Indian, culture for centuries. Here are some benefits and interesting facts about this fruit, which apparently is considered as a vegetable in the Indian cuisine.

Climate and Culture

Jackfruit, scientifically called Artocarpusheterophyllus, is a species of tree in the fig, mulberry and breadfruit family. Tropical regions around the world provide the best environment for this fruit to grow. A mature jack tree is capable of producing 200 fruits every year, with older trees reaching the limit of 500 fruits per year. Commonly used in South East Asian cuisines, particularly the Indian subcontinent, jackfruit is consumed in both forms; ripe and unripe. Popular in different South Asian countries for the various ways in which it can be consumed, jackfruit is also the national fruit of Bangladesh and the state fruit of two Indian states; Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Nutritional Benefits

Jackfruit contains moderate levels of vitamin C and potassium. In a 100 grams (3.5 oz) portion, raw jackfruit provides 95 calories with more than 25% of the daily value of Vitamin B6, making it a rich source of this vitamin. The edible pulp of the fruit is 74% water, 23% carbohydrates, 2% protein and 1% fat. The carbohydrate part of the fruit is a source of dietary fiber with sugars being the prime component. Overall, the fruit serves as a healthy option to include in a balanced diet.

Culinary Creations

The flavor of the ripe fruit can be compared to the combination of taste of pineapple, apple, mango and banana to some extent. Jackfruit is consumed in different parts of South East Asia in different forms,  curries, cutlets, candies, desserts just to name a few. The blend of traditional ways of cooking this fruit with modern spices makes it a delicious food to eat.

Availability

Jackfruit is commercially marketed through complex marketing channels including middlemen and other intermediaries. Outside the countries of origin, the fruit can be found at food markets across South East Asia. It is also made available for export by canning in the form of syrups and frozen fruit. Jackfruit is used round the year in both forms, canned and dried. Recently, the reports in 2019 show the increasing availability of the packed form of Jackfruit in U.S. grocery stores, in the form of premade dishes and prepared ingredients as well.

Every fruit and vegetable provides us with a unique mixture of essential nutrients. Some may be high in vitamin C while others might be high in potassium, the interesting part is, all the fruits and vegetables collectively provide a wide variety of options for a healthy diet. With the trend of processed food taking over the traditional values of fresh food, we need to go back in time and take a look at fruits like Jackfruit, which played a significant role in the times when no Wall marts and Costco existed.
