Toe Wrestling
Toe Wrestling
Sports around the world are looked upon with an eye of healthy living and staying fit. Most sports promise fun and some amount of physical activity. Contrary to this, there are lot of sports that actually do not involve sweating and running and jumping, but fun and a sense of victory. Toe wrestling is one of those weird yet not so boring sports.
The invention of this sport is as hilarious as its rules. Toe wrestling was invented by four drinkers in Ye Olde Royal Oak Inn in Wetton, Staffordshire, England. It was in 1974 when the four drinkers were in the inn, bemoaning about the lack of world champions in England that this sport came into existence. Inventing a new sport which never existed would surely make one of them the very first world champion in the history of the sport so invented. With this belief and optimism, Pete Cheetham, Eddie Stansfield, Pete Dean and Mick Dawson produced a new sport named toe wrestling. A rule board was produced with the help of the Yorkshire Evening Post. A small trophy was made and so began the journey of this unusual sport.
Mick became the first world champion, defending the title next year. However, in 1976, a Canadian visitor took the glory and won the championship. The event was discontinued for a long time after the Canadian’s victory.
Now, the sport is gaining popularity and is even played outside England.
Pakistan, India and china are the other countries involved in this sport.
The rules of the game are simple. The game is played bare foot. Removing the opponent’s shoes and socks is a fair play ritual. After the players are bare foot and ready to battle, they link the toes with foot flat on opponent’s foot. Then, the opponents try to capture each other’s toe for 3 seconds with full dominance. The one of succeeds in doing so wins. The game is played in a best of three series format. Rounds are played while alternating between right and left foot.
Eminent competitors of the sport include Ben Woodroffe and Alan
Nash, who apparently are the current co-owners of the sport. Lisa Shenton, also known as ‘Twinkle Toes’, is the current women’s world champion whereas Alan Nash, famous as ‘Nasty’, is the present men’s champion.
This sport might not have those adrenaline rushes but it surely is one which can be played without any tensions or elite fitness levels. Sometimes, a small competition to make your friends feel like a loser is enough to lift your spirits and get you back in the zone. People across the globe enjoy playing different sports. From chess to football, each sport has its unique charm that cannot be compared. Cristiano Ronaldo might be the best footballer this world has ever witnessed, but he beating ViswanathanAnand in a game of chess would be a weird fantasy. Toe wrestling remains one of those weird sports. It may not be an Olympic game but who knows; maybe in future we would see this sport reach new levels of competition along with an increased fan base.
