Year 2014 for India
Every year comes with exciting promises of new happenings and a unique experience to witness what would later go down in history. A lot happens in those 365 days. From goals to new bills, record breaking hits to IPL, at the end we look back with pride and enjoy the year’s end. With 2014 being a great year for India, here it is at a glance.
Politics
Indian general elections that were held from 7 April to 12 May 2014 became the longest election in India’s history. 16th May, BJP won the elections with staggering numbers and promised to bring better days for the common man. The month of May was even more special as Mr. Narendra Modi took oath and became India’s 14th Prime Minister. The aura of this great man could be felt within months after him taking the charge, when Prime Minister Modi launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to keep India green and clean. Yet another major event was the emergence of a new state named Telangana as Andhra Pradesh split into Andhra and Telangana.
Film Industry
Bollywood, on the other hand was set for comebacks of old stars. Govinda, Rekha, Rani Mukherjee and Madhuri Dixit were seen on the screen with a promise to entertain the audience with their same old glimmer. New records were set as the movie PK, starring Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma , BamanIrani and Sushant Singh, released on December 2019, became the highest grossing Bollywood film of the year with ₹854 crores or US$ 140 million of box office collection.
Sports
Winning 64 medals in total and finishing at fifth spot, behind Scotland,
India had put on a decent performance in the 2014 Common Wealth Games. Indian football had a great year as opposed to an average year for the Indian cricket team that had a rough patch In England. The India
Women’s Football team won the third SAFF championship in an exquisite fashion thrashing Nepal 6-0 in the final. Also, Bengaluru FC was crowned the I-League champions in their maiden year and ATK took home the first ISL trophy.
Science and Technology
GSAT 14, an Indian communications satellite was launched in January to replace the GSAT-3 that was launched in 2004. January also marked the launch of Agni-IV missile, developed by India’s DRDO, it promised improved missile technology. 24th September 2014- India created history by successfully launching Mangalyaan as it entered the Mars orbit in its first attempt. India had been on its toes to make contributions and efforts in understanding the life beyond the planet Earth.
Awards and Honours
It was a moment of pride when Kailash Satyarthi, children’s rights advocate and activist against child labor won the Nobel Peace Prize along with Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai, on 10th October 2014 in Oslo, Norway. This shows how even amidst hard times and unfavorable circumstances one can create a difference and make this world a better place to live in.
All in all, 2014 was packed with thrill and extraordinary events. India also had a decent financial year, which made 2014 a complete show with a lot of memories and good old days to look upon.
